This report analyzed 13 schools in Kansas to see which ones offered the best value master's degree programs for teaching students. The goal was to highlight schools with more affordable prices than others offering similar quality experiences.
This ranking is not just a list of inexpensive schools. We also consider each school's quality, since we believe a low-quality school may not be a 'bargain' at any price. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.
For nationwide and regional rankings, we use out-of-state tuition and fees in our calculations. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.

Our 2023 rankings named Fort Hays State University the best value school in Kansas for teaching students working on their master’s degree. Located in Hays, Kansas, the fairly large public school handed out 613 master’s degree awards in 2020-2021.

One thing to take note of is that FHSU does offer online graduate classes in some areas. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 93% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.

In addition to its best value ranking, and one of the reasons why the school is on the list, ESU is ranked #4 for overall quality in Kansas.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend Wichita State University. The school came in at #3 on this year’s Best Value Teaching Master’s Degree Schools in Kansas list. This fairly large public school is located in Wichita, Kansas, and it awarded 102 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Out-of-state tuition fees for graduate students at WSU are $15,323 per year.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at WSU. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 37% took at least some of their classes online.

Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at K -State. During the 2019-2020 year, about 52% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.

With a ranking of #7, University of Saint Mary did quite well on this year’s best value schools for teaching students working on their master’s degree. With a ranking of #9, Baker University did quite well on this year’s best value schools for teaching students working on their master’s degree. This small private not-for-profit school is located in Baldwin City, Kansas, and it awarded 143 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state graduate students at Baker are $12,246 a year.
