This report analyzed 1,234 schools in the United States to see which ones were the most popular master's degree programs for teaching students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our analysis found Western Governors University to be the most popular school for teaching students who want to pursue a master’s degree in the United States. Located in Salt Lake City, Utah, the large private not-for-profit school awarded 8,188 diplomas to qualifed master’s degree students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 82% were women.
Since the graduate programs at WGU are primarily online school, so it is a great choice for returning adults and students who work full time.
The excellent master’s degree programs at Grand Canyon University helped the school earn the #2 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular teaching schools in the United States. Grand Canyon University is located in Phoenix, Arizona and has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 7,134 master’s degrees to qualified students.
Of those students who received their degree, 82% were women.

The excellent master’s degree programs at Liberty University helped the school earn the #5 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular teaching schools in the United States. Liberty University is a private not-for-profit institution located in Lynchburg, Virginia. The school has a large population, and it awarded 1,881 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.

Lamar University landed the #9 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular master’s degree teaching programs. Lamar University is a fairly large public school situated in Beaumont, Texas. It awarded 1,625 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 75% of those degree recipients were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at Lamar University. In 2019-2020 about 95% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
University of the Cumberlands did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for teaching students to get a master’s degree. It came in at #11 on the list. Cumberlands is located in Williamsburg, Kentucky and has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 1,311 master’s degrees to qualified students.

UOPX - Arizona is a large private for-profit school situated in Tempe, Arizona. It awarded 1,173 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.

University of West Alabama ranked #13 on this year’s Most Popular Teaching Master’s Degree Schools list. Livingston, Alabama is the setting for this medium-sized institution of higher learning. The public school handed out master’s degrees to 1,072 students in 2020-2021.

One thing to take note of is that Touro does offer online graduate classes in some areas. During the 2019-2020 year, about 73% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
Concordia University, Chicago did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for teaching students to get a master’s degree. It came in at #20 on the list. Located in River Forest, Illinois, the medium-sized private not-for-profit school awarded 811 diplomas to qualifed master’s degree students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 76% were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at Concordia University, Chicago. In fact, around 98% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
National Louis University came in at #21 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Teaching Master’s Degree Schools ranking. Located in Chicago, Illinois, the medium-sized private not-for-profit school awarded 789 diplomas to qualifed master’s degree students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 82% were women.
Online graduate courses are available at NLU, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. During the 2019-2020 year, about 59% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
The University of Texas at Arlington landed the #22 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular master’s degree teaching programs. UT Arlington is a public institution located in Arlington, Texas. The school has a large population, and it awarded 786 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 83% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that UT Arlington does offer online graduate classes in some areas. In fact, around 65% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Brandman University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for teaching students to get a master’s degree. It came in at #23 on the list. Brandman University is a medium-sized private not-for-profit school located in Irvine, California that handed out 784 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 82% of those degree recipients were women.

Capella University landed the #24 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular master’s degree teaching programs. Capella University is a large private for-profit school located in Minneapolis, Minnesota that handed out 767 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.
