Our analysis looked at 37 schools in the Great Lakes Region to see which basic certificate programs offered the best educational experiences for teaching students. The factors used to develop this ranking include those related to how in-demand the school us, the overall quality of the school, and post-graduation wages, and more.

Our 2023 rankings named College of Lake County the best school in the Great Lakes Region for teaching students working on their basic certificate.
In-state students pay an average of $9,632 in tuition and fees if they attend College of Lake County full time. Those students who come from outside the state pay an average of $12,824.
You may have the opportunity to take online classes at College of Lake County. In fact, around 91% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Out of the 37 schools in the Great Lakes Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College landed the # 2 spot on the list.
Students from Wisconsin who attend NWTC full time pay an average of $4,734 in tuition and fees. Out-of-state students pay an average of $6,849.
Some students may be able to take online classes at NWTC. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 51% of undergraduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
A rank of #3 on this year’s list means Madison Area Technical College is a great place for teaching students working on their basic certificate.
Students from Wisconsin who attend Madison College full time pay an average of $4,600 in tuition and fees. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $6,769.
Madison College does have options available for those who want to take online classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. In fact, around 77% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. The school came in at #4 on this year’s Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region list.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at UW - Eau Claire is $8,874. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $17,149.
One thing to take note of is that UW - Eau Claire does offer online classes in some areas. In 2019-2020 about 81% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
A rank of #5 on this year’s list means University of Wisconsin - Madison is a great place for teaching students working on their basic certificate.
In-state students pay an average of $10,720 in tuition and fees if they attend UW - Madison full time. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $38,608.
You may have the opportunity to take online classes at UW - Madison. Of all the undergraduates enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 99% took at least some of their classes online.
Fox Valley Technical College did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best places for teaching students to get a basic certificate. It came in at #6 on the list.
Students from Wisconsin who attend FVTC full time pay an average of $4,746 in tuition and fees. Out-of-state students pay an average of $6,861.
Some students may be able to take online classes at FVTC. In 2019-2020 about 42% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Purdue University - Main Campus ranked #7 on this year’s Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region list.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at Purdue is $9,992. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $28,794.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online classes at Purdue. In fact, around 89% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Ball State University landed the #8 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best basic certificate teaching programs.
In-state students pay an average of $10,290 in tuition and fees if they attend Ball State full time. Out-of-state students pay an average of $27,524.
If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Ball State does offer online classes for certain majors. In fact, around 89% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Rasmussen University - Illinois ranked #9 on this year’s Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region list.
Rasmussen University - Illinois does not offer a discount to in-state students, so the average tuition and fees for all undergraduates is $13,883. This amount may be reduced if you receive financial aid.
You may have the opportunity to take online classes at Rasmussen University - Illinois. Of all the undergraduates enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 99% took at least some of their classes online.
With a ranking of #10, University of Wisconsin - Stout did quite well on this year’s best schools for teaching students working on their basic certificate.
In-state students pay an average of $9,553 in tuition and fees if they attend UW - Stout full time. Those students who come from outside the state pay an average of $17,820.
One thing to take note of is that UW - Stout does offer online classes in some areas. In 2019-2020 about 86% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Viterbo University came in at #11 in this year’s edition of the Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region ranking.
The average tuition and fees at Viterbo is $29,920. In-state students do not receive a discount, however you may be able to reduce your price if you receive financial aid.
One thing to take note of is that Viterbo does offer online classes in some areas. During the 2019-2020 year, about 66% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee came in at #12 in this year’s edition of the Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region ranking.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at UWM is $9,610. Those students who come from outside the state pay an average of $21,475.
Online courses are available at UWM, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 97% of undergraduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point ranked #13 on this year’s Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region list.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at UW - Stevens Point is $8,331. Those students who come from outside the state pay an average of $17,035.
Some students may be able to take online classes at UW - Stevens Point. In fact, around 95% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Bowling Green State University - Main Campus ranked #14 on this year’s Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region list.
Full-time students from Ohio pay an average of $13,061 in tuition and fees if they choose to attend BGSU. Out-of-state students pay an average of $21,050.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online classes at BGSU. During the 2019-2020 year, about 35% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
Milwaukee Area Technical College landed the #15 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best basic certificate teaching programs.
Full-time students from Wisconsin pay an average of $4,793 in tuition and fees if they choose to attend MATC. Out-of-state students pay an average of $6,908.
Some students may be able to take online classes at MATC. In 2019-2020 about 84% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Ivy Tech Community College came in at #16 in this year’s edition of the Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region ranking.
Full-time students from Indiana pay an average of $4,637 in tuition and fees if they choose to attend Ivy Tech Community College. Out-of-state students pay an average of $8,927.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online classes at Ivy Tech Community College. Of all the undergraduates enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 81% took at least some of their classes online.
University of Southern Indiana came in at #17 in this year’s edition of the Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region ranking.
In-state students pay an average of $9,509 in tuition and fees if they attend USI full time. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $21,812.
USI does offer online classes for certain degree levels. In fact, around 67% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College landed the #18 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best basic certificate teaching programs.
If you don’t receive financial aid, you can expect a bill for $30,550 to cover tuition and fees at SMWC. The school does not offer an in-state discount.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online classes at SMWC. During the 2019-2020 year, about 56% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
Central Michigan University ranked #19 on this year’s Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region list.
If you want to attend Central Michigan, expect to pay an average of $13,094 in tuition and fees. Of course, this could be reduced if you receive financial aid.
Some students may be able to take online classes at Central Michigan. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 36% of undergraduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh landed the #20 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best basic certificate teaching programs.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at UW Oshkosh is $7,733. Those students who come from outside the state pay an average of $15,306.
You may have the opportunity to take online classes at UW Oshkosh. Of all the undergraduates enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 64% took at least some of their classes online.
Rasmussen University - Wisconsin did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best places for teaching students to get a basic certificate. It came in at #21 on the list.
If you want to attend Rasmussen University - Wisconsin, expect to pay an average of $12,860 in tuition and fees. Of course, this could be reduced if you receive financial aid.
Rasmussen University - Wisconsin is primarily an online school, so it is a great choice for returning adults and students who work full time.
Indiana University - Bloomington ranked #22 on this year’s Best Teaching Basic Certificate Schools in the Great Lakes Region list.
Full-time students from Indiana pay an average of $11,333 in tuition and fees if they choose to attend IU Bloomington. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $38,352.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online classes at IU Bloomington. During the 2019-2020 year, about 99% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
Waukesha County Technical College did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best places for teaching students to get a basic certificate. It came in at #23 on the list.
Students from Wisconsin who attend WCTC full time pay an average of $4,488 in tuition and fees. Out-of-state students pay an average of $6,603.
WCTC does have options available for those who want to take online classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. Of all the undergraduates enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 17% took at least some of their classes online.
With a ranking of #24, Baldwin Wallace University did quite well on this year’s best schools for teaching students working on their basic certificate.
Some students may be able to take online classes at Baldwin Wallace College. In fact, around 50% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
With a ranking of #25, Grand Valley State University did quite well on this year’s best schools for teaching students working on their basic certificate.
Some students may be able to take online classes at GVSU. In 2019-2020 about 94% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
