Our 2023 rankings named Gardner - Webb University the most popular school in North Carolina for teaching students working on their doctor’s degree. This small private not-for-profit school is located in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, and it awarded 69 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 80% were women.
Gardner - Webb does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 59% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
You’ll be in good company if you attend North Carolina State University. The school came in at #2 on this year’s Most Popular Teaching Doctor’s Degree Schools in North Carolina list. Raleigh, North Carolina is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out doctor’s degrees to 57 students in 2020-2021.

East Carolina University is a large public school located in Greenville, North Carolina that handed out 39 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of North Carolina at Greensboro. It ranked #5 on our 2023 Most Popular Teaching Doctor’s Degree Schools in North Carolina list. Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, the fairly large public school awarded 33 diplomas to qualifed doctor’s degree students in 2020-2021.

Western Carolina University landed the #8 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular doctor’s degree teaching programs. Located in Cullowhee, North Carolina, the fairly large public school awarded 16 diplomas to qualifed doctor’s degree students in 2020-2021.
Around 94% of those degree recipients were women.
WCU does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 87% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
High Point University landed the #9 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular doctor’s degree teaching programs.
