Our analysis looked at 2,358 schools in the United States to see which programs were the most popular for teaching students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our analysis found Western Governors University to be the most popular school for teaching students in the United States. Located in Salt Lake City, Utah, the large private not-for-profit school handed out 12,503 degrees in 2020-2021.
Degree recipients from WGU accumulate an average of $26,218 in student debt by the time they complete their degree. During the early years of their career, WGU graduates make an average of $62,838 annually. Of those students who received their degree, 84% were women.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Grand Canyon University. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Most Popular Teaching Schools list. Grand Canyon University is a private for-profit institution located in Phoenix, Arizona. The school has a large population, and it awarded 9,205 degrees in 2020-2021.
By the time they get their degree, students from this school have racked up an average of $31,746 in student loans. For those students on a 10-year repayment plan, the average payment due each month is around $174. Out of the 2,358 schools in the United States that were part of this year’s ranking, Lamar University landed the # 5 spot on the list. Located in Beaumont, Texas, the fairly large public school handed out 2,560 degrees in 2020-2021.
On average, students take out $28,227 in loans while pursuing their degree. Once they receive their degree, Lamar University graduates enter the workforce, making an average salary of $49,498 during the early year of their career. Of those students who received their degree, 77% were women.

Ball State University came in at #6 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Teaching Schools ranking. Ball State is a public institution located in Muncie, Indiana. The school has a large population, and it awarded 2,554 degrees in 2020-2021.

Relay Graduate School of Education did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for teaching students. It came in at #12 on the list. Relay Graduate School of Education is a small private not-for-profit school situated in New York, New York. It awarded 1,753 degrees in 2020-2021.
Once they receive their degree, Relay Graduate School of Education graduates enter the workforce, making an average salary of $72,704 during the early year of their career. Around 77% of those degree recipients were women.
